What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is an overuse condition of the heel in which inflammation or degeneration of the plantar fascia causes pain. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs from the tip of the big toe to the heel bone and supports the arch of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, with 1 in 10 people experiencing symptoms in their lifetime.
If symptoms of plantar fasciitis persist longer than two weeks or are affecting your daily activities, our foot and ankle specialists at Seaview Orthopaedics can provide high-quality care to relieve pain and get you back to your activities.
What are the Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?
Common symptoms of plantar fasciitis include:
- Heel pain, specifically in the morning or after long periods of rest, inactivity, or sitting
- Sharp, stabbing, or burning sensation in the foot
- Stiffness
- Feeling of tightness in the Achilles
Symptoms may subside during the day and increase in the morning and at night.
Causes & Risk Factors
Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury caused by excessive trauma of the plantar fascia. Those who engage in heavy physical activity or who are frequently on their feet for work are at a high risk for developing this condition.
Other factors may put you more at risk for developing plantar fasciitis, such as:
- Tight Achilles tendon
- Wearing shoes with little support
- Obesity
- Flat feet or high arches
Plantar Fasciitis Treatment
A variety of treatment options are available for plantar fasciitis, ranging from non-surgical to surgical.
Nonsurgical Treatment
- Oral or topical Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
- Orthotics
- Physical Therapy
- Platelet rich plasma (PRP)
- Amniotic allograft
Surgical Treatment
- Partial plantar fasciectomy: Open surgery where part of the diseased portions of the plantar fascia are removed
- Partial plantar fasciectomy: Arthroscopic partial transection of the diseased plantar fascia
- Partial plantar fasciectomy with excision of heel spur and fasciotomy of abductor muscle with release of the nerve of baxter
- High energy ultrasound
- High energy ultrasound with percutaneous tenotomy of the plantar fascia
How can Plantar Fasciitis be prevented?
Plantar fasciitis can be prevented by avoiding overuse of the feet and stretching before and after heavy exercise. Choosing footwear that will provide proper arch support and cushioning or use of gel shoe inserts can also help prevent inflammation of the plantar fascia. Early intervention and preventative measures are key to maintaining foot health.
