Sports Medicine
Bio
Dr. Daniel Scura is a non-operative Sports Medicine physician from Farmingdale, New York. He is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and in Sports Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Scura’s strong interest in sports medicine lead him to study at the State University of New York College at Cortland where he wished to study to become an Athletic Trainer. Instead, because of his strong interest in biology he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree. From there, he pursued his medical degree at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem, New York. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) was his inspiration to pursue non-operative sports medicine as opposed to operative sports medicine.
Dr. Scura completed a four-year residency program in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Nassau University Medical Center where he served as the Academic Chief Resident in his final year. As a Physiatrist, Dr. Scura has had extensive training in the treatment of patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), neurological disorders, musculoskeletal pathology and pain, in addition to many other pathologies. He expanded his passion for sports medicine during residency by creating a Sports Medicine curriculum where residents would learn ultrasound and have the opportunity to cover Molloy University Athletics and perform their pre-participation physicals alongside an attending physician. After graduation, he completed a one-year fellowship in Sports Medicine at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, New York. During this time, he continued to cover high school and college sporting events, hone his ultrasound skills to better perform ultrasound guided injections and diagnostic studies, and continue to learn about musculoskeletal pathology in children, adolescents, and adults.
Through his extensive training, Dr. Scura can address and treat musculoskeletal complaints from head to toe, offering various modalities of treatment. Some of these treatment modalities include patient-specific prescription of physical therapy, acute concussion management, management of strains and sprains, trigger point injections, ultrasound guided joint injections, ultrasound guided peripheral nerve hydrodissection, viscosupplementation for knee, hip, and shoulder arthritis and pain, PRP and prolotherapy, as well as nerve conduction studies (NCV) and electromyography (EMG).
Dr. Scura prides himself on not only being able to understand a patient or athlete’s complaint from a medical perspective, but by also being able to relate to them. In his free time, he enjoys remaining physically active. He is an avid weightlifter (and former bodybuilder), outdoor enthusiast, and novice cyclist. Be sure to look out for him on the gravel trails and roads in the area!
