How to Prepare for SurgeryWith Dr. David Junkin
Preparing to undergo surgery can be a very stressful time in someone’s life. Taking the right steps
beforehand can make all the difference in easing your mind and ensuring a smooth recovery. In this
article, Dr. David Junkin guides you through essential preparations to help you feel ready and confident
for your procedure. At Seaview Orthopaedics, our surgeons and surgical schedulers are with you every
step of the way to ensure a seamless surgical process and recovery.
Prepare Your Home for Surgery
Making adjustments in your home prior to surgery will help ensure a safe and comfortable recovery
environment. Start by removing loose cords, rugs, or objects that may be a tripping hazard. Place
frequently used items, like toiletries and day-to-day essentials at waist level to avoid reaching or
bending. Additionally, meal prepping can be incredibly helpful. Prepare and freeze easy-to-reheat meals
to reduce the need for cooking and ensure you have nutritious food available during your recovery. You
may even find it beneficial to set up a recovery space on the main floor in order to minimize the need
for stairs. Making these changes will help you navigate your home more easily and reduce the risk of
injury post-surgery.
Go Over Medications You Can and Can’t Take Prior to Surgery
It is important to discuss with your surgeon any medication that you may be taking prior to surgery. You
will receive a list of medication you can continue to take up until the day of the procedure, as well as
anything that needs to be stopped beforehand. In most cases, your surgeon will require you to halt use
of anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin, Advil, and Aleve seven days prior to decrease risk of
bleeding. Any medication that is able to be continued until the day of surgery should be taken only with
small sips of water.
Do Not Eat or Drink After Midnight the Day of Surgery
You will be required to begin fasting, meaning no food or water, starting at midnight the day before your
surgery. This is crucial to ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the anesthesia during the
procedure.
Write Down Additional Questions for the Day of Procedure
Open communication with your surgeon prior to surgery will help you understand the procedure,
expected outcomes, and recovery process. If the day of your procedure arrives and you still have
unanswered questions, we advise that you write them down and bring the list with you to the hospital.
Don’t hesitate to ask for clarity on any aspect of your surgery or post-operative care.
Understand What Happens Post-Op
When you wake from your surgery, know that your surgeon will have already discussed the details of
the procedure and any last-minute instructions with your family or guardian. It is essential to review all
post-op instructions provided by your surgeon or surgical scheduler ahead of time, so you are fully
prepared when you wake up. Being familiar with these instructions in advance will help ensure a smooth
recovery and minimize any confusion or stress after the surgery.
