How do patient reported outcome studies work?

Surveys are administered by CareSense, beginning at the office appointment when you complete your pre-operative paperwork for your procedure. At this time, you will be asked to complete a survey on an iPad, answering questions about mobility, joint function, and quality of life. At predetermined intervals after your surgery is performed and while you are working on your rehabilitation, your surgeon would like to track your progress. You will be sent a text message and/or email on which is a weblink for you to access the follow-up surveys which you will be asked to complete. You will be sent reminder texts and emails to finish any post-operative surveys which are due and your surgeon has not gotten back yet. The text messages and emails include a secure link that directs you to your survey. You can complete the survey in comfort and privacy of your home or any where else on a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. Each survey should take 10 minutes or less to complete.

Why am I being asked to complete these survey questions?

This information is valuable because it facilitates clinical research that can improve outcomes, and help your surgeon maintain high quality patient care. It can assist your surgeon in evaluating your progress since there will be a database containing de-identified information on other patients who had similar surgical procedures to yours. By reviewing this information from past patients, your surgeon gets valuable insights into how treatment can be improved for future patients. The greater the number of patients participating in filling out the surveys, the more powerful this process for improving patient care becomes.

How does completing these surveys benefit me?

When you participate in the patient reported outcomes studies by filling out surveys sent to you, your surgeon will be able to track your progress and the overall success of your surgery by monitoring your level of pain, function, and general quality of life before and after surgery. Your participation is very valuable to your surgeon as well as to the optimization of your post-operative care. Better clinical decisions for your benefit can be made when your survey information is compared to that of other patients who have undergone the same or similar procedures.
